We travelled to Nevada City, California, to portray EricksonWoodWorking® through the place where its furniture begins to take shape. Between the forest and the traces of gold mining at the Diggins, the photographs follow the people, the materials and life in the workshop.
At EWW®, the work begins with selecting the wood, allowing it the time it needs to dry and studying each board before cutting. The grain guides the composition; the relationship with the body guides the shape of a chair. Each piece finds its individuality in these decisions and bears the imprint of the cabinetmaker and their hands.
The catalogue brings Gary Snyder’s perspective into the project through his poem ‘Among’, reproduced inside the front cover. Meeting him at Kitkitdizze, his home in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, marked a defining moment in the project and deepened our understanding of a radical relationship with nature, rooted in an awareness of belonging to it and attentiveness to its cycles. Seen through this lens, the cracks, knots and variations in the wood reveal themselves in EWW®’s furniture as expressions of a life, its time and its place.
Our journey to Nevada City connects EricksonWoodWorking®’s furniture with the forest, the Diggins and the workshop. Meeting Gary Snyder at Kitkitdizze deepened this relationship with nature. The catalogue brings together the photographic story and his poem ‘Among’, linking place, material and craft.
